Work with storyboards and express your self to the crew (each one individually) about your vision of the movie and what you want to get out of them, using their talents. The director works with the script or changes it completely.
Film making is a process. But nowadays with digital cameras it's easy and fast. Digital cameras allows for anyone to have access as a film director these days. Digital cameras are the modern day movie makers choice of choices. There's is something about viewing your movie on film with a nice natural grain on it though.
More Film Directing Tips: Directing Actors is a major part of the film making process. This is what is going to be shown to all the viewers. How well can the director manipulate the the actors to fit the mood and character that the director has already laid out. Know your script and your story.
What drives your actors? What makes you actors ignite? Directing requires mother type energy. Listening, Patience, communication, trust, etc. So how can you get someone to do what you want? Well you listen to them and find out what they are affected by emotionally and then put them into situations that you know would spark that flame.
Then think about what kind of sound you want, then leave it to the sound engineer. Then think about what kinda lights you want, then leave it to the DP. Then think about what kind of art direction you want , then leave it to the art director. You are the master of the look and story as a director.
