Surf's Up!

Riding the waves can be the thrill of a lifetime. But what does it take to become a surfer? If you have ever dreamed about incredibly big seas with huge powerful waves crushing onto sandy beaches, then you should definitely think about learning to surf. It's the most exciting water sport. Serious surfers must be very brave, love adventure and have lots of energy. Once they've experienced the excitement of a ride on a top of the waves, they never want to stop.

A Quick Guide to the Rules and Etiquette of Surfing

The Rules of surfing have been around for many years, they are often unspoken and always bent or broken to a degree. Surfers, whether experienced or absolute novices, cannot afford to ignore the rules of surfing. In today's utterly crowded conditions we must all try a little harder to monitor our own behavior in the water. Simply because without some idea of what is ok in the water, and what is not, we destroy and devalue the surfing experience for all others around us. Here are the basic rules, it's a very good idea to learn them, ignore these guidelines at your own peril.

Women's Surfing: Gaining Acceptance in a Male Dominated Sport

Where men used to be the Big Kahunas or expert surfers, though, things are adjusting for gender today. At the beginning of 2004, the top 20 male pro surfers averaged about $90,000 each in purse money, with former world champion Kelly Slater breaking the $1 million ceiling. Meanwhile among women pro surfers' salaries, the top 20 were reported to have averaged roughly $20,000 per year but could and still can earn much more in endorsements. Noteworthy is that Australia's Layne Beachley, the only surfer--or either gender--to win six consecutive world titles, has earned more than $440,000 in purses.

I think at this stage we are all pretty aware of the damaging effects of the sun and why it's so vital that we protect our skin with sunscreens. Let the sun shine in but don't over do it. Ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays are invisible to the human eye, yet can be very damaging to the skin, and yes even deadly, if we are over exposed by not employing the proper protection.

Sunburn Remedies and Prevention

Sunburn hurts! Sunburn usually develops as a result of over-exposure to the sun or less commonly, occupational exposure. Anyone who visits a beach, goes fishing, works in the yard, or simply is out in the sun can get sunburned. Mild and moderate sunburn results in skin irritation and redness and can be safely treated at home. Severe sunburn requires medical attention. The best treatment for sunburn is prevention!

Before You Buy the Bikini, Understand What the Bikini Will Buy You

Since we were teens, women have believed a babe in a bikini gets the boys. The better we look in a bikini, the belief goes, the better our chances of snagging a man's attentions. In a superficial way, this is correct. The female form scantily clad or otherwise, is sure to attract male attention. However, this is where the power of the bikini stops.

O'Neill Highland Open in Scotland

The host wave for the Highland Open is the fabled Thurso East. Lying at 59 degrees north, Thurso will be the most Northern wave spot on the planet to host a professional surfing event. Likened by some to a coldwater Nias in Sumatra, Thurso is one of the most consistent spots on the British Isles, renowned for dishing up long, winding right-hand tubes that spin off the flat, kelp covered reef. But scoring Scotland’s prize wave comes at a cost as the peaty brown water in the river mouth barely rises above a bone-chilling 8 - 10c. This is serious wetsuit territory.

The Dreaded Swimsuit

Let's face it. A swimsuit doesn't cover much (some less than others) so we can't hide behind layers of fabric...or can we? Very few people, unless they live in an area where they are beach bound all of the time and it is part of the uniform, are comfortable picking out a bathing suit for summer, much less wearing one. In an attempt to demystify the process and to help you find the style that will enhance your body, here are a few pointers.

Interview with Derek Hulme

Derek Hulme is the Director World Tours for the International Bodyboarding Association (IBA), which is the governing body of world bodyboarding. Around the same time the ISP/ASP tour was beginning to take off. So in 1988 competitors and officials alike began meeting following every Pipeline event to write a set of competition rules that all countries could follow with the hope of forming a world circuit to determine the World Champion. The driving force behind these meetings were the heroes and legends of today. Riders like Pat Caldwell, Jack Lindholm, Alexander de Pontes, Mike Stewart, Ben Severson, Ross Hawke, and Fabio Aquino, met with officials Mary Lee Christensen, Derek Hulme, Tony Abrahams, Phil Smith and Bob Thomas. This was not an easy task but after 4 years, a set of competition rules was finally approved. It was first used by the Honolulu Bodysurfing Club to run the 1992 World Championship and later adopted by all the major bodyboard associations.

Bodyboard Techniques

The red flags are up on the beach, waves are as high as mountains. Hurricane season is here and the bodyboarding conditions are heavenly. I grab my bodyboard and dash to the shoreline, hearing people behind me yelling that kid is going to die. I turn my head and smile at them, knowing it is not the wave you die on it is the wave you die for. To me this day was as good as Christmas and no one could stop me from going in. I held my board above my body and turned around to see who was watching me. It seemed like I was a rock star at a concert, people where lined up on the beach watching my every move.

Luau

The Hawaiian word Lu'au means a feast, which has interesting origins in folklore. In ancient Hawaii, women were not allowed to eat their meals with men. Women, no matter who they were, and commoners of both sexes, were forbidden by the prevailing religion to consume certain delicacies. All this changed in when King Kamehameha II abolished all kinds of traditional religious practices in 1819. He hosted a feast where he ate with women as symbolic act to end retrograde religious practices and this historical feast was called the Luau.

Krista Scott: A Spunky Spirit, Snow Boarder, Surfer Girl, Australian Harvest Worker

I always keep my eyes open for interesting people, and Krista Scott just absolutely grabbed my attention. I first met Krista 2 days ago on a whitewater kayaking weekend where she accompanied our group to do our first kayaking lessons on the Ottawa River. In the van she told us that she recently did a 13 month trip to Australia where she did all sorts of harvest work in different locations. She also mentioned that she completed an ESL program at the university and is heading off for her first teaching assignment to Vietnam this fall. I knew at that stage that this was a very interesting young woman and I decided I would get to know her a bit better.

The Pacific coast of Costa Rica is fast becoming one of the hippest spots on the backpack merry-go-round. It's a surfer's paradise in Central America's most laid-back holiday spot. Areas such as the Nicoya peninsula and Dominical further to the south are the real hotspots where the beaches are sublime and trees and rocks tumble down the meet the fine, white sand.
